Diabetes is no joke. I know this because I have taken care of my Dad for the last year, helping him maintain healthy living. My dad was aging and he moved in with us so we can help him control his Type 2 Diabetes. Living by himself since my Mom passed away took a toll. His diet was all wrong and his care was not what the doctor wanted. He was not doing his blood glucose test religiously. His diabetes got worse, too.

The first thing you need to know is how to diagnose diabetes if you suspect your loved one may have it. Your Primary Care Physician or your health care professional can start the process. When I took my Dad for his check-up, his doctor asked him to get a Fasting Blood Sugar Test. To make sure that the test is accurate, I monitored his dinner and strongly told him that as per doctor’s orders, nothing after 9pm. It was hard for him, but at least the doctor allowed some water. Ask your doctor if water is allowed before you do take a sip!

Next, schedule the blood test really early. This way, the patient does not get lightheaded. The Lab opens at 7am. So my Dad and I were there when they opened. He was in and out and after that, he could take his regular breakfast of oatmeal and coffee. How to diagnose diabetes is easy if you know what you’re looking for.
